Hangout Fest: Coheed and Cambria on Astini News

GULF SHORES, Alabama -- Goth rock? Emo? Prog rock? Under any genre, Coheed and Cambria delivered an energetic set that created the first mosh pit of Hangout Music Festival. The band, which performed at Workplay in Birmingham on Wednesday, followed the Alabama Shakes' performance at the Chevrolet Stage with their own hour set one the Hangout Stage at 3:15.

The band made their home known, stating, "We're Coheed and Cambria from New York City," no less than three times. A smaller crowd made their way across the beach for the set, or then, perhaps, it's a stage with more room. The 60-minute set was much more comfortable than the Alabama Shakes, and Coheed and Cambria were very comfortable in a festival atmosphere. The sound didn't translate to the back of the audience, but near the stage, it was flawless. It seems Claudio Sanchez's voice may not translate to a live set, but it held, and it was near studio quality.

The band barreled through "Evil Ways" and into the addition of a female companion for a cover of Gotye's "Somebody that I Used to Know." Taking little time to interact, Sanchez hid behind his mane as his band concluded its set with "A Favor House Atlantic" and "Welcome Home."

The time slot was clearly divided, as Yelawolf took to one of the side stages and drew large numbers. But Coheed and Cambria delivered, offering the festival's first memorable moment with the cover of Gotye.
